Where are my White House Talking Points?

George W. Bush is gone, and his stalker groupies don’t know what to do with themselves.  No one is sending them talking points, and they are  F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G  O-U-T! They haven’t had to think for such a long time.  Poor things!

The Alan Dershowitz Diet Plan

If you are ever in a situation where you need to induce vomit or curb your appetite, just read anything written by Alan Dershowitz. Literally, anything! I promise you, part of you will die after reading his garbage.  Take this excerpt from his WSJ article for example:

The claim that Israel has violated the principle of proportionality — by killing more Hamas terrorists than the number of Israeli civilians killed by Hamas rockets — is absurd. First, there is no legal equivalence between the deliberate killing of innocent civilians and the deliberate killings of Hamas combatants. Under the laws of war, any number of combatants can be killed to prevent the killing of even one innocent civilian. (400+ children killed were combatants?)

Second, proportionality is not measured by the number of civilians actually killed, but rather by the risk posed. (Oh boy! where have I heard that before?) This is illustrated by what happened on Tuesday, when a Hamas rocket hit a kindergarten in Beer Sheva, though no students were there at the time. Under international law, Israel is not required to allow Hamas to play Russian roulette with its children’s lives. (not to sound insensitive, but did he just say that no one was killed or hurt in this attack? I suppose by his logic, Hamas shouldn’t allow Israel to play Mercenaries with its children’s lives either.  Self-defense goes both ways!)

While Israel installs warning systems and builds shelters, Hamas refuses to do so, precisely because it wants to maximize the number of Palestinian civilians inadvertently killed by Israel’s military actions. Hamas knows from experience that even a small number of innocent Palestinian civilians killed inadvertently will result in bitter condemnation of Israel by many in the international community. (if that’s the case then why would Israel give Hamas exactly what it wants? Moreover, how does one inadvertently shell the UN headquarters? Or drop white phosphorous on a densely populated area? Or allegedly use  depleted uranium weapons? )

Israel understands this as well. It goes to enormous lengths to reduce the number of civilian casualties — even to the point of foregoing legitimate targets that are too close to civilians.

I wonder what the potential number of victims would have been so we can add it to the toll.  Since we’re counting “potential” victims now.  If Dershowitz claims that Israel has practiced restraint, then I am scared to know what not practicing restraint would have looked like.  I understand that Dershowitz’s job  has been to defend high profile criminals.  But defending war crimes is a whole different ball game.

A New Era In American History?

Barack Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States. His inauguration inspired over 2 million people to make the trek to Washington D.C., and hundreds of millions around the world to tune in from Tanzania, to Estonia. Let’s see what that means now.

Rita and the Rifle

I’m listening to this song by Marcel Khalife right now.  The song is called Rita wal Bonduqiyah, or Rita and the Rifle—originally a beautiful poem written by the late Mahmoud Darwish, and turned into a song by Khalife.  People have interpreted Rita as well as the Rifle to be all sorts of things. Some suggest Rita was an Israeli (Jewish) girl Darwish fell in love with in his youth. Some claim she was a Palestinian lover who was killed; while others interpret Rita as the homeland torn away from its natives.  Readers also interpret the rifle both literally and metaphorically. The latter translates the Rifle as a symbol of the occupation forces or conversely for resistance.  Whatever extent to which you wish to read into this poem/song, one thing remains still—it’s an expression of the evasive reality of occupation and national struggle in both private and public realms. Rita and the Rifle  by Mahmoud Darwish (English Translation) /  In Arabic: ريتا و البندقية

Between Rita and my eyes there is a rifle  / .
And whoever knows Rita kneels and prays /
To the divinity in those honey-colored eyes /
And I kissed Rita /
When she was young /
And I remember how she approached /
And how my arm covered the loveliest of braids /
And I remember Rita /
The way a sparrow remembers its stream /

Ah, Rita /

Between us there are a million sparrows and images /
And many a rendezvous /
Fired at by a rifle / .
Rita’s name was a feast in my mouth /
Rita’s body was a wedding in my blood /
And I was lost in Rita for two years /  وأنا ضعت بريتا . .
And for two years she slept on my arm /
And we made promises /
Over the most beautiful of cups /
And we burned in the wine of our lips /
And we were born again /

Ah, Rita! / .

What before this rifle could have turned my eyes from yours /
Except a nap or two or honey-colored clouds? /
Once upon a time /  كان يا ما كان
Oh, the silence of dusk /
In the morning my moon migrated to a far place /
Towards those honey-colored eyes /

And the city swept away all the singers /
And Rita /
Between Rita and my eyes — A rifle / .

Party Foul

Is it not ironic (and funny) that in a recent state propaganda conference in the Daqahliyah district in Egypt to endorse Mubarak and his “solidarity” with Gaza, the National Democratic Party (NDP)—the ruling party—printed its own country’s flag upside down and passed them out to the audience? So instead of the red stripe on the top and black on the bottom while the white is in the middle, this was reversed.  One observer responded, “As if it really came down to the flag…everything in this country works upside down.  Did the [ruling] Party forget what the flag looked like or what?”

Perhaps it has.

Say It Ain’t So Joe!

Joe the Plumber will become a war correspondent in Israel for a conservative site pjtv.com. This is merely proof that anyone can become a “journalist” in this country. It truly is the land of opportunity. How else can you explain the sick joke that is cable news? 23/6 sees the silver lining though in its letter to Hamas:

Lego Plumbers are more real than Joe, which is not even his real name.

Lego Plumbers are more real than Joe, which is not even his real name.

Dear Hamas,

Allow us to restate that we deplore your actions, which have harmed both Palestinians and Israelis. However, it has come to our attention that Joe the Plumber is headed to the Middle East, to cover the war for WNWO-TV in Toledo. And while we are not technically asking you to kill Joe the Plumber (that’s illegal!), we are encouraging you to reject a ceasefire until at least three rockets are fired in his direction. He’s easy to spot. He literally has a skinhead, and he’ll be surrounded by Israelis who will be asking themselves, “it’s come to this? Israel’s security is dependent on the editorial skills of Joe the Plumber?”

Thanks and pbuh,

23/6

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle DUMB (in order from left to right)

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle DUMB (in order from left to right). What are they so happy about? And where is Mubarak's conjoined US-Israel flag lapel pin?

I am too harsh on Israel sometimes.  It really doesn’t deserve all the blame.  This Gaza invasion could have not been done without Mubarak’s help.  Denying humanitarian aid to the injured civilians is a huge task, but one man is up to it.  I’d hurl my shoes at him, but I actually value my shoes more than criminal dictators.
